Choosing A Wedding Ring

Questions To Ask Yourself before You Start to Shop

Your wedding ring is a very precious item, which will hopefully be with you for the rest of your life, so it’s very important to choose something with which you will be happy.  Looking at catalogs and jewelry stores, you may find the choices to be overwhelming.  It’s important to break down the choices and decide what is most important to you.

Should They Match?

The first thing you should decide is whether you want your wedding ring to be identical to your fiancé’s.  Some couples prefer identical rings, and it is traditional, but it is not required.  You may choose for your wedding ring to be more elaborate and decorative, while your husband to be may prefer one that is simple and manlier.

You may be able to find a set of wedding bands that fits your criteria, or you may want to choose them separately.  You may also want for your wedding ring to match your engagement ring, but again that is not necessary.

What Material?

The three main options for wedding rings are yellow gold, white gold, and platinum, but a variety of other materials are now becoming more common.  If you are not using gemstones, you may choose a softer metal such as silver; on the other end of the scale, you may choose a harder and less luminous metal like tungsten carbide.

The latter is becoming a popular wedding ring choice for men; be aware, however, that rings made with such hard metals cannot be cut by simple ring cutters should something happen.

Gems or No Gems?

Increasingly, wedding rings are being chosen that contain a wide variety of diamonds and gemstones channel set into the band.  You may choose for both rings to be so elaborated, just yours, or neither.

Would You Like it Engraved?

One way that many couples are personalizing their wedding rings today is by having a message engraved into the inside of the bands.  You may want to have your names, the wedding date, or a special secret message on the inside of your ring.  You could even opt to have something silly – you’re the only one who’ll know that it’s there!

It’s good to have an idea in your head of what kind of wedding ring you want before you walk into a jewelry store.  While this guide is far from comprehensive, hopefully it will help you to start thinking about what choices you need to make and to start visualizing your perfect wedding ring.
